Washington Irving (1783–1859) was an American author, essayist, biographer and historian of the early 19th century. He is best known for his short stories like Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. His historical works include biographies of George Washington, Christopher Columbus and the prophet Mohammad. The present story is an adaptation of the original short story.

ওয়াশিংটন ইরভিং (১৭৮৩–১৮৫৯) একজন ১৯ শতকের গোড়ার দিকের আমেরিকান লেখক, প্রাবন্ধিক, জীবনী লেখক। রিপ ভ্যান উইঙ্কল এবং দ্য লেজেন্ড অফ স্লিপি হোলোর মতো ছোট গল্পগুলির জন্য তিনি সবচেয়ে বেশি পরিচিত। তাঁর ঐতিহাসিক রচনায় জর্জ ওয়াশিংটন, ক্রিস্টোফার কলম্বাস এবং নবী মোহাম্মদ এর জীবনী অন্তর্ভুক্ত রয়েছে। বর্তমান গল্পটি মূল ছোট গল্পটির একটি রূপান্তর।

Let's read 1st Part

 

In a village among the Kaatskill Mountains, there lived a simple, good natured fellow, called Rip Van Winkle.

ক্যাটস্কিল পর্বতমালার মধ্যে একটি গ্রামে, রিপ ভ্যান উইঙ্কল নামে একটি সরল, ভাল প্রকৃতির সহকর্মী ছিলেন।

 The children of the village loved him.

গ্রামের ছেলেমেয়েরা তাকে ভালোবাসত।

 He assisted at their sports and made their playthings.

তিনি তাদের খেলায় সহায়তা করতেন এবং তাদের খেলার জিনিসপত্র তৈরি করতেন।

He also taught them to fly kites and shoot marbles, and told them stories.

তিনি তাদের ঘুড়ি ও মার্বেল মারতে শিখিয়েছিলেন এবং গল্পও বলেছিলেন।

 Rip helped everyone in their work, but could not keep his own farm in order.

রিপ সবাইকে তাদের কাজে সহায়তা করতেন, তবে তার নিজের খামারটি যথাযথ রাখতে পারেননি।

 His fences fell to pieces, his cows strayed, weeds grew in his fields.

তার বেড়াগুলি টুকরো টুকরো হয়ে পড়েছিল, তার গরু বিভ্রান্ত হয়েছিল, আগাছা তার জমিতে বেড়ে উঠেছিল।

 His wife complained about his idleness.

 His son, Rip, inherited his habits.

His sole follower was his dog, Wolf.

তাঁর একমাত্র অনুসারী ছিলেন তাঁর কুকুর, নেকড়ে বাঘ।

 Rip used to sit and talk here with his friends, on long summer days.

দীর্ঘ গ্রীষ্মের দিনগুলিতে রিপ এখানে তার বন্ধুদের সাথে বসে গল্প করত।

 Nicholas Vedder, the landlord of the village inn was Rip's good friend.

গ্রামের সরাইখানর জমিদার নিকোলাস ভেদদার ছিলেন রিপের ভাল বন্ধু।

 Rip had to leave this group eventually, as his wife complained that his friends encouraged his idle habits.

শেষ পর্যন্ত রিপকে এই দলটি ছেড়ে চলে যেতে হয়েছিল, কারণ তার স্ত্রী অভিযোগ করেছিলেন যে তার বন্ধুরা তার অলস অভ্যাসকে উত্‍সাহিত করে।

 Poor Rip was reduced almost to despair.

দরিদ্র রিপ সঙ্কুচিত হয়ে প্রায় হতাশ হয়ে পড়েছিলেন।

He started walking away into the woods with Wolf.

তিনি নেকড়ে বাঘটাকে নিয়ে জঙ্গলের দিকে হাঁটতে শুরু করলেন।

 On one of these days, Rip had gone high up the Kaatskill Mountains.

এই দিনগুলির একটিতে, রিপটি ক্যাটস্কিল পর্বতমালার উপরে উঠেছিলেন।

 From there, he looked down into a deep and dark valley.

সেখান থেকে তিনি নীচে গভীর এবং অন্ধকার উপত্যকায় তাকালেন।

 Evening was gradually advancing.

সন্ধ্যা ধীরে ধীরে এগিয়ে চলছিল।

 He felt that he should return home.

তিনি অনুভব করেছিলেন যে তাঁর যেন বাড়ি ফিরে যাওয়া উচিত্‍।

 As he was about to go down, he heard a voice from the distance calling: "Rip Van Winkle! Rip Van Winkle!"

যখন তিনি নামতে যাচ্ছিলেন, তিনি দূর থেকে একটি আওয়াজ শুনলেন: "রিপ ভ্যান উইঙ্কল! রিপ ভ্যান উইঙ্কল!"

He saw a strange figure slowly coming up the rocks.

সে দেখতে পেল এক অদ্ভুত মানবমূর্তি ধীরে ধীরে পাথরের উপরে উঠে আসছে।

He carried something heavy on his back.

 সে তার পিঠে ভারী কিছু একটা বহন করেছিল।

Coming closer, Rip saw a short old man with thick bushy hair and a beard.

কাছাকাছি এসে, রিপ ঘন ঝোপের মতো চুল এবং দাড়ি সহ একটি ছোটখাটো বৃদ্ধ লোককে দেখতে পেল।

He made signs for Rip to assist him with the load. Always helpful, Rip did so.

তিনি রিপকে বোঝাতে সহায়তা করার জন্য ইশারা করেছিলেন। সর্বদা সহায়ক, রিপ তাই করেছিল।

They came to a round hollow, surrounded by trees.

তারা গাছ দ্বারা ঘেরা একটি বৃত্তাকার ফাঁপা যায়গায় এসেছিল।

On a level spot in the centre, he saw a most unusual crowd of people playing at ninepins.

কেন্দ্রের একটি স্তরের স্থানে, তিনি নাইনপিনে খেলতে আসা লোকদের মধ্যে সবচেয়ে অস্বাভাবিক ভিড় দেখতে পেয়েছিলেন।

They looked peculiar. One had a large head, broad face and small piggish eyes.

তারা অদ্ভুত লাগছিল। একজনের মাথা বড়, প্রশস্ত মুখমন্ডল এবং ছোট শূকর এর মতো চোখ ছিল।

The face of another seemed to consist entirely of nose!

অন্যের মুখ দেখে মনে হয়েছিল পুরোটা নাকের মিশ্রণ!

They all had beards, of various shapes and colours.

তাদের সকলের বিভিন্ন আকার এবং রঙের দাড়ি ছিল।

They were enjoying themselves, yet were silent.

তারা নিজেরাই উপভোগ করছিল, তবু নীরব ছিল।

They looked at Rip with a fixed, statue-like gaze.

তারা স্থির, প্রতিমার মতো দৃষ্টিতে তাকিয়ে রিপের দিকে তাকাল।

His companion, it seemed, was carrying some liquid in a keg on his back.

তার সঙ্গী, মনে হয়েছিল, তার পিঠে একটি ছোট পিপার মধ্যে কিছু তরল বহন করছিল।

This was unloaded, and everyone drank from the keg.

এটি থেকে বের করা হয়েছিল এবং সকলেই পিপা থেকে পান করেছিলেন।

Rip was fearful at first.

রিপ প্রথমে ভয় পেয়েছিল।

After a while, his fear subsided.

কিছুক্ষণ পর তার ভয় কমে গেল।

Feeling thirsty, he had several drinks himself.

তৃষ্ণার্ত বোধ করায় তিনি নিজে বেশ কয়েকটি পানীয় পান করেছিলেন।

Slowly, his eyes closed.

আস্তে আস্তে তার চোখ বন্ধ হয়ে গেল।

He fell into a deep sleep.

তিনি গভীর ঘুমে পড়লেন।

On waking, he found himself on the high hill where he had first seen the old man.

জেগে ওঠার পরে, তিনি নিজেকে সেই উঁচু পাহাড়ে দেখতে পেলেন যেখানে তিনি বৃদ্ধাকে প্রথম দেখেছিলেন।

It was a bright sunny morning.

এটি একটি উজ্জ্বল রোদ ঝালমলে সকাল ছিল।

The birds were twittering among the bushes.

পাখি গুলো ঝোপঝাড়ের মাঝে কিচির মিচির করছিল।

"Surely," thought Rip, "I have not slept here all night!" He whistled for Wolf, but no dog was to be seen.

"অবশ্যই," রিপ ভেবেছিল, "আমি এখানে সারা রাত ঘুমাইনি!" সে ওল্ফের হয়ে শিস দিয়েছিল, কিন্তু কোনও কুকুরকে দেখা যায়নি।

He decided to visit the scene of last evening.

তিনি গত সন্ধ্যায় দৃশ্যটি দেখার সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছেন।

When he reached the spot, he was surprised to see that a mountain stream was now flowing through it! What was to be done?

তিনি ঘটনাস্থলে পৌঁছে অবাক হয়ে দেখলেন যে এখন একটি পর্বত ধারা প্রবাহিত হয়েছে! কি করার ছিল?

The morning was passing away, and poor Rip was hungry.

সকাল কেটে যাচ্ছিল, এবং দরিদ্র রিপ ক্ষুধার্ত ছিল।

He shook his head and went homeward.

মাথা নেড়ে সে বাড়ির দিকে চলে গেল।

As he came near his village, he met many people he had never seen before.

নিজের গ্রামের কাছে আসতেই তিনি এমন অনেক লোকের সাথে সাক্ষাত করেছিলেন যা তিনি আগে কখনও দেখেননি।

This surprised him, as he thought he knew everyone around his village.

এটি তাকে অবাক করেছিল, কারণ তিনি ভেবেছিলেন যে তিনি তাঁর গ্রামের চারপাশের সবাইকে জানেন।

They all stared at him with surprise.

তারা সকলেই অবাক হয়ে তাকে তাকিয়ে রইল।

Rip suddenly noticed that his beard had grown a foot long!

রিপ হঠাৎ খেয়াল করলো যে তার দাড়ি এক ফুট লম্বা হয়ে গেছে!

He saw his village was now larger, with more people.

তিনি দেখেন তাঁর গ্রাম এখন আরও বড়, আরও লোক রয়েছে।

There were rows of houses which he had never seen before.

সেখানে সারি সারি বাড়ি ছিল যেগুলি সে আগে কখনও দেখেনি।

Strange names were over the doors.

দরজার উপরে অদ্ভুত নাম ছিল।

He found his own house was empty and in ruins.

সে দেখতে পেল যে তার নিজের বাড়ি খালি এবং ধ্বংসাবশেষে রয়েছে।

He called loudly for his wife and children.

তিনি স্ত্রী এবং সন্তানদের জন্য উচ্চস্বরে ডাকলেন।

All was silence.

সব ছিল নীরবতা।

The village inn was gone.

গ্রাম সরাইখানা শেষ হয়ে গেছে।

Let's read 3rd Part

 The appearance of Rip, with his long beard and peculiar dress, soon attracted the attention of people.

দীর্ঘ দাড়ি এবং অদ্ভুত পোশাক সহ রিপের উপস্থিতি শীঘ্রই মানুষের দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণ করেছিল।

Rip told them that he meant no harm, but merely came there to look for his friends and folks.

রিপ তাদের জানিয়েছিল যে তার ক্ষতি করার অর্থ নেই, তবে কেবল তার বন্ধু এবং লোকজনকে খুঁজতে এসেছিল।

He asked about Nicholas Vedder.

তিনি নিকোলাস ভেদদার সম্পর্কে জিজ্ঞাসা করেছিলেন।

There was silence for a little while.

কিছুক্ষণ চুপ করে রইল।

Then an old man replied, "Nicholas Vedder? Why, he is dead and gone for these eighteen years!"

তখন একজন বৃদ্ধ জবাব দিলেন, "নিকোলাস ভেদদার? কেন, তিনি মারা গেছেন এবং এই আঠারো বছর ধরে চলে গেলেন!"

Rip's heart died away, at finding himself thus alone in the world.

নিজেকে এভাবে পৃথিবীতে একা খুঁজে পেয়ে রিপের হৃদয় মারা গেল।

He cried out, "Does nobody here know Rip Van Winkle?"

তিনি চিৎকার করে বললেন, "এখানে কেউ কি রিপ ভ্যান উইঙ্কলকে চেনে না?"

"Oh, there he is, leaning against the tree," exclaimed two or three.

"ওহ, তিনি সেখানে আছেন, গাছের দিকে ঝুঁকছেন," দু'জন তিনজনকে বললেন।

As he looked, Rip saw a fellow who looked exactly like his previous self.

তিনি যেমন তাকালেন, রিপ এমন এক সহকর্মীকে দেখতে পেল যিনি তার আগের স্বর মতো দেখতে লাগলেন।

He understood that this was his son, Rip! Just then, a young woman with a child came his way.

সে বুঝতে পেরেছিল যে এটাই তার ছেলে রিপ! ঠিক তখনই একটি শিশু সহ এক যুবতী তার পথে এল।

She said that Rip Van Winkle had been her father, and had gone away twenty years back when she was little.

তিনি বলেছিলেন যে রিপ ভ্যান উইঙ্কল তার বাবা ছিলেন এবং তিনি যখন ছোট ছিলেন তখন কুড়ি বছর আগে চলে গিয়েছিলেন।

All stood amazed.     সবাই অবাক হয়ে দাঁড়িয়ে রইল।

An old woman looked at his face and exclaimed, "Sure enough! It is Rip Van Winkle! Welcome home again, old neighbor. Why, where have you been these twenty long years?"

একজন বৃদ্ধ মহিলা তার মুখের দিকে তাকিয়ে চিত্কার করে বললেন, "নিশ্চয়ই যথেষ্ট! এটি রিপ ভ্যান উইঙ্কল! বৃদ্ধ বাড়িতে আবারও স্বাগতম! কেন, আপনি এই দীর্ঘ বিশ বছর কোথায় ছিলেন? "

Soon everybody came to know Rip's story, for the whole twenty years had been to him but as one night.

শীঘ্রই সকলেই রিপের গল্প জানতে পেরেছিল, পুরো বিশ বছর তাঁর কাছে ছিল তবে এক রাতের মতো।

Some had doubts, and insisted that Rip had been out of his head.

কারও কারও সন্দেহ ছিল, এবং জোর দিয়েছিল যে রিপ তার মাথা থেকে বেরিয়ে গেছে।

Even to this day, a thunder-storm on a summer afternoon at Kaatskill reminds them of the strange people playing at a game of ninepins.

আজ অবধি, কাটসকিলের গ্রীষ্মের বিকেলে একটি বজ্র-ঝড় তাদের নয়নপিনের একটি খেলায় অদ্ভুত লোকদের স্মরণ করিয়ে দেয়।
