The Shop That Never Was

 Let's start:

Herbert George Wells (1866–1946), a famous English writer, was best known for his science fictions. His most notable science fictions include The Time Machine, The Invisible Man etc. Wells also wrote many short stories. One of his best-known short stories is The Country of the Blind. The Shop That Never Was is an adaptation from his famous short story The Magic Shop.

বিখ্যাত ইংরেজ লেখক হার্বার্ট জর্জ ওয়েলস (১৮৬৬-১৯৪৬) তাঁর বিজ্ঞান কল্পকাহিনীর জন্য সর্বাধিক পরিচিত ছিলেন। তাঁর সবচেয়ে উল্লেখযোগ্য বিজ্ঞান কল্পকাহিনীগুলির মধ্যে রয়েছে টাইম মেশিন, দ্য ইনভিজিবল ম্যান ইত্যাদি। ওয়েলস অনেকগুলি ছোট গল্পও লিখেছিলেন। তাঁর অন্যতম ছোট গল্প হ'ল দ্য কান্ট্রি অফ দ্য ব্লাইন্ড। দ্য শপ দ্যাট নেভার ওয়াজ তাঁর বিখ্যাত ছোট গল্প দ্য ম্যাজিক শপের একটি রূপান্তর।

 Let's read 1st Part:

I had seen the Magic Shop from afar several times.

আমি ম্যাজিক শপটি দূর থেকে বেশ কয়েকবার দেখেছি।

 I had passed it once or twice, but never had I thought of going in.

আমি এটি একবার বা দুবার পাস দিয়ে গেছি, কিন্তু কখনই ভিতরে যাওয়ার কথা ভাবিনি।

 One day, my son, Gip dragged me up to the shop.

একদিন, আমার ছেলে, গিপ আমাকে টেনে দোকানে নিয়ে গেল।

 There was such keenness in him that I was forced to get in.

তাঁর মধ্যে এমন তীব্রতা ছিল যা আমাকে ভিতরে যেতে বাধ্য করেছিল।

 It was a little narrow shop, not very well lit.

এটি একটি একটু সংকীর্ণ দোকান ছিল, খুব ভাল আলোকিত ছিল না।

 On the shop counter, there were several crystal balls.

দোকানের কাউন্টারে বেশ কয়েকটি স্ফটিক বল ছিল।

 On the floor, there were magic mirrors: one to draw you out long and thin and one to make you short and fat.

মেঝেতে ম্যাজিক আয়না ছিল: একটি তোমাকে লম্বা এবং পাতলা করে আঁকতে এবং একটি তোমাকে ছোট এবং মোটা করবে।

 While we were laughing at all these, the shopman appeared.

  "How can I help you?" said he. "I want to buy my little boy a few simple tricks," I said.

 "Um!" said the shopman, and scratched his head for a moment, as if thinking.

 Then he drew from his hair a glass ball and said, "Something like this?" and held it out.

তখন সে তার চুল থেকে একটি কাচের বল টেনে বের করলো, " কিছুটা এইরকম?" এবং এটি বের করে রাখল।

 The action was unexpected.

এই কার্যকলাপ অপ্রত্যাশিত ছিল।

I had seen the trick done at magic shows, but I had not expected it here.

আমি ম্যাজিক শোগুলিতে সম্পন্ন করা কৌশল গুলি দেখেছি, কিন্তু আমি এখানে এটি আশা করি না।

 "That's good", I said with a laugh. "Isn't it?" said the same shopman.

 Gip stretched out his hand to take this object and found merely a blank palm.

Activity 2

Fill in the blanks using words from the Help-Box:

Gip was keen to enter the magic shop. The shop had many crystal balls. Gip's father wanted to buy some tricks for his son. The shop man performed an unexpected action.

 Let's continue 2nd Part:

"It's in your pocket," said the shopman, and there it was.

"এটি তোমার পকেটে আছে," দোকানী বলল, এবং এটি সেখানে ছিল।

 "How much does it cost? “I asked.

"এটার দাম কত?" আমি জিজ্ঞাসা করলাম।

 

"There is no charge for glass balls," said the shopman politely.

"কাঁচের বলের জন্য কোনও দাম নাই," নম্রভাবে দোকানটি বলল।

 "We get them free."

 He drew a business card from his cheek and handed it to me.

 "Genuine Magic Goods, sir," he said.

"সত্যিকারের জাদু করার জিনিস এটি মহাশয়," সে বলল।

 He now turned towards Gip with a friendly smile and said, "You wanted a magic box, didn't you?" "Yes," Gip said.

সে এখন বন্ধুত্বপূর্ণ হাসি দিয়ে গিপের দিকে ফিরে বলল, "তুমি একটি ম্যাজিক বক্স চেয়েছিলে, তাই না?" "হ্যাঁ," গিপ বলল।

 "It's in your pocket," he said.

"এটা তোমার পকেটে আছে," সে বলল।

 Gip discovered the box with surprise.

গিপ বাক্সটি অবাক হয়ে আবিষ্কার করল।

 Then the shop man quickly went behind the counter and was absent for a while.

তারপরে দোকানের লোকটি দ্রুত কাউন্টারটির পিছনে গেল এবং কিছুক্ষণ অনুপস্থিত ছিল।

 "Let's look behind the counter, Gip," I said. "He's making fun of us."

 Just then, he appeared again from a dark corner of the room.

 "You'd like to see our showroom, Sir?" said he.

"আপনি আমাদের শোরুম দেখতে চান, মহাশয়?" সে বলেছিল.

 Gip tugged my finger forward.

গিপ আমার আঙুল ধরে সামনের দিকে টানছিল।

 In the showroom, there were many things that Gip fancied.

শোরুমে, জিপ যেগুলি কাল্পনা করে এমন অনেকগুলি জিনিস সেখানে ছিল।

He turned to this astonishing man with respect.

সে শ্রদ্ধার সাথে এই অবাক মানুষটির দিকে ফিরলেন।

 "Is that a magic sword?" he said.

"এটা কি ম্যাজিক তরোয়াল?" সে বলেছিল.

 "A Magic Toy Sword—this is a unique one! It neither bends, breaks, nor cuts the fingers," replied the shopman.

"একটি যাদু খেলনা তরোয়াল - এটি একটা অনন্য! এটি বাঁকা হয় না, ভাঙবে না বা আঙ্গুলগুলিও কাটবে না," দোকানদার জবাব দিল।

 I tried to find out what they cost, but the shopman did not pay attention to me.

আমি তাদের দাম কী তা জানার চেষ্টা করেছি, কিন্তু দোকানদার আমার দিকে মনোযোগ দেয়নি।

He had got Gip now.

এখন গিপ পেয়েছিল।

I saw, with a feeling of distrust, that Gip was holding this person's finger as usually he held mine.

অবিশ্বাসের অনুভূতি নিয়ে আমি দেখলাম যে, গিপ এই ব্যক্তির আঙ্গুলটি ধরেছিল যেভাবে সাধারণত সে আমার হাত ধরত।

The shopman showed Gip magic-trains that ran without steam, clockwork and a box of soldiers that all came alive when one said a magic word. "You've never seen such a one!" said the shopman. "You'll take that box?"

দোকানদার গিপকে ম্যাজিক ট্রেনগুলি দেখিয়েছিল যেগুলি কোনও বাষ্প ছাড়াই, অবিরত এবং একটি বাক্স সৈন্য ছাড়াই চলেছিল যখন কেউ একজন যাদু শব্দ বলে তখন সমস্ত জীবিত হয়ে আসে। "তুমি এর আগে কখনও দেখ নি!" দোকানদার বলল। "তুমি বাক্সটি নেবে?"

"We'll take that box," I said.

 And the shopman swept the soldiers back again, shut the lid, and waved the box in the air.

এবং দোকানদার সৈন্যদের আবার ফিরিয়ে নিয়ে গেল, ঢাকনাটি বন্ধ করে দিয়ে বাক্সটি বাতাসে দুলাল।

 And there it was, in brown paper, tied up and with Gip's full name and address on the paper. He laughed at my amazement.

এবং এটি ছিল বাদামি পেপারে, বেঁধে দেওয়া হয়েছিল এবং কাগজের উপর গিপের পুরো নাম এবং ঠিকানা ছিল। সে আমার অবাক হওয়ায় হেসেছিল।

Let's continue 3rd Part:

I felt very uneasy and began to look for the way out.

আমি খুব অস্বস্তি বোধ করলাম এবং বেরোনোর পথ খুঁজতে শুরু করলাম।

 Turning to Gip, I saw him standing on a stool.

গিপের দিকে ফিরতেই আমি দেখি তাকে একটা স্টলে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকতে।

The shopman was holding a big drum in his hand. "We're playing hide and seek, daddy!" cried Gip.

দোকানদার তার হাতে একটা বড় ড্রাম ধরে ছিল। "আমরা লুকোচুরি খেলছি বাবা!" গিপ চিত্‍কার করে বলেছিল।

 And before I could prevent him, the shopman had put the big drum over him.

এবং আমি তাকে আটকাতে পারার আগেই দোকানদার তার উপরে বড় ড্রামটি রেখেছিল।

 "Take that off," I cried, "this instant. You'll frighten the boy."

"সেটা খুলে ফেল," আমি চিত্‍কার করে বললাম, "তাড়াতাড়ি করে। তুমি ছেলেটিকে ভয় দেখাচ্ছো" "

 The shopman did so without a word.

দোকানদার কোনও কথা না বলেই তা করল।

 He held the big drum towards me to show its emptiness.

শূন্যতা দেখানোর জন্য সে আমার দিকে বড় ড্রামটি তুলে ধরেছিল।

 The stool was empty, too. My boy had disappeared!

টুলটিও খালি ছিল। আমার ছেলেটি অদৃশ্য হয়ে গেল!

 "Where is my boy?" I said.

"আমার ছেলে কোথায়?" আমি বলেছিলাম.

 "You see," he said, displaying the drum's interior, "this is genuine magic!" I jumped at him and fell into utter darkness.

"তুমি দেখ," সে ড্রামের অভ্যন্তর দেখিয়ে বলল, "এটি সত্যিকারের যাদু!" আমি তার দিকে ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়লাম এবং পুরো অন্ধকারের মধ্যে পড়লাম।

 THUD!

 "Sorry, Sir, I didn't see you coming, “someone said.

 I saw I was in Regent Street and I had collided with a man, and a yard away was Gip.

He was carrying four parcels in his arm.

 I called for a cab.

আমি একটা গাড়ী ডাকলাম।

 I got in with Gip.

আমি গিপেকে নিয়ে ভিতরে ঢুকলাম।

"Dad!" Said Gip at last, "that was a proper magic shop!" Gip looked completely undamaged.

"বাবা!" অবশেষে গিপ বলেছিল, "এটি ছিল একটি যথাযথ জাদুর দোকান!" গিপকে সম্পূর্ণ অক্ষত লাগছিল।

He was neither scared, nor disturbed.

সে না ছিল ভীত, না ছিল বিরক্ত।

 There in his arms were four parcels containing items from the magic shop.

তাঁর বাহুতে ম্যাজিক শপ থেকে আইটেম সম্বলিত চারটি পার্সেল ছিল।

 Since then I have been up and down Regent Street several times looking for that shop.

তার পর থেকে আমি রিজেন্ট স্ট্রিট দিয়ে বেশ কয়েকবার ঐ  দোকানের সন্ধানে যাতায়াত করেছি।

 After all, I had not paid for the items.

সর্বোপরি, আমকে আর ঐ জিনিসগুলির জন্য দাম দিতে হইনি।
