Goodbye to the Moon

Let's start:

Monica Hughes (1925–2003) was a Canadian author who is especially known for her books on science fiction. She also wrote adventure and historical novels. The text Goodbye to the Moon is an adaptation from one of her popular works of science fiction.

First Part

 

I sat in the dark view-room of the space station. আমি স্পেস স্টেশনের অন্ধকার ভিউ-রুমে বসেছিলাম।

I looked out at the Earth.  আমি পৃথিবীর দিকে তাকালাম।

It was somewhat familiar to me.  এটি আমার কাছে কিছুটা পরিচিত ছিল।

There was a small photograph of the blue planet in our drawing room.  আমাদের ড্রয়িংরুমে নীল গ্রহের একটি ছোট্ট ছবি ছিল।

I, Kepler Masterman, was born on the Moon fifteen years back.  আমি, কেপলার মাস্টারম্যান, পনের বছর আগে চাঁদে জন্মগ্রহণ করেছিলেন।

My mother had been dead five years ago.  আমার মা পাঁচ বছর আগে মারা গিয়েছিলেন।

She had told me stories about the Earth, that excitingly unknown place. তিনি আমাকে পৃথিবী সম্পর্কে গল্প বলেছিলেন, সেই উত্তেজনাপূর্ণ অজানা জায়গা।

My father is the Governor of the Moon.  আমার বাবা চাঁদের গভর্নর।

He was going on an expedition to the Earth.  তিনি পৃথিবীতে একটি অভিযানে যাচ্ছিলেন।

And here was I, accompanying him on my first ever journey to the Earth.  এবং আমি এখানেই ছিলাম, পৃথিবীতে আমার প্রথম যাত্রায় তাঁর সঙ্গী।

I looked down at Earth.  আমি নিচে পৃথিবীর দিকে তাকালাম।

It seemed so close to me that I felt I could touch it.

We had to wait for another fifteen minutes before our journey started.

Feeling restless, I left the viewing room and glided down the long passage to the centre of the space station.

I looked out into space.  আমি মহাকাশে তাকিয়ে রইলাম।

My Moon, my home appeared very small now.  আমার চাঁদ, আমার বাড়ি এখন খুব ছোট আবির্ভুত হচ্ছিল।

At home, the kids would be getting ready for the party.  বাড়িতে, বাচ্চারা পার্টির জন্য প্রস্তুত হয়ে উঠেছিল।

There's always been a party at sunrise.  সবসময়ই সূর্যোদয়ের সময় একটি পার্টি ছিল।

The Sun rose only 12 or 13 times a year so it was something special for us.

বছরে মাত্র ১২ বা ১৩ বার সূর্য উঠেছিল তাই এটি আমাদের জন্য বিশেষ ব্যাপার ছিল।

he sunlight crept slowly across the surface of the Moon until finally night was gone.

Rearrange the following sentences in the correct order and put the numbers in the given boxes:

There is one extra word. Kepler had seen the photographs of the Earth. He was making an expedition to the Earth for the first time. Kepler felt restless as he had to wait for the journey to begin. The Moon appeared very small when he looked out into space.

Second Part

Suddenly the door opened behind me.  হঠাৎ আমার পিছনে দরজা খুলে গেল।

I could hear excited voices. আমি উত্তেজিত কণ্ঠ শুনতে পেলাম।

The ferry from Earth must have arrived.  পৃথিবী থেকে ফেরি এসে পৌঁছেছে।

It carried passengers from the Earth ready to go for the Moon Safari, people eager to look around the Moon.

এটি পৃথিবী থেকে যাত্রীদের বহন করে চাঁদ সাফারি করার জন্য প্রস্তুত ছিল, লোকেরা চাঁদের চারপাশে দেখার জন্য আগ্রহী।

And here we were, going to the Earth instead! I slipped out of the room to the central lobby.

এবং এখানে আমরা পরিবর্তে পৃথিবীতে যাচ্ছি! আমি ঘর থেকে বাইরে বেরিয়ে গেলাম কেন্দ্রীয় লবিতে।

Father was standing there. বাবা সেখানে দাঁড়িয়ে ছিলেন।

"Good luck, Governor." Someone called out. “See you in six months at the latest, "replied my father, cheerfully."শুভকামনা, গভর্নর।" কেউ ডেকে বললেন, "সর্বশেষে ছয় মাসের মধ্যে দেখা হবে," উত্তরে আমার বাবা বললেন।

I walked with him to the Earth ferry. আমি তাঁর সাথে পৃথিবী ফেরিতে চলে গেলাম।

It was magnificent. এটি ছিল দুর্দান্ত।  It was three times as big as our Moon-ferries.

এটি আমাদের চাঁদের ফেরিগুলির চেয়ে তিনগুণ বড় ছিল।

"Is everything on Earth as wonderful as this?" I whispered to Father.

I found my eyes were closing.  আমার চোখ বন্ধ হয়ে গেছে।

It seemed only a few minutes before Father's voice woke me up.

"Kepler! You mustn't miss this sight. We've just entered into the Earth's orbit. Look! “

I looked out eagerly. আমি অধীর আগ্রহে বাইরে তাকিয়ে রইলাম।

I recognized the narrow stretch of Central America, then the majestic Atlantic beneath us.

A world that was seven-tenths water! On Moon, water was harder to get than oxygen.

Washing was a luxury and drinking a special delight.  কিছু পরিষ্কার করা ছিল বিলাসিতা  এবং পান করা  ছিল একটি বিশেষ আনন্দ।

I had grown up thinking water was the most precious thing in the universe.  আমি এটা ভেবে বড় হয়েছি যে জল মহাবিশ্বের সবচেয়ে মূল্যবান জিনিস।

Now I could see that the Earth was covered with it.  এখন আমি দেখতে পেলাম যে পৃথিবী এটি দিয়ে ঢাকা ছিল।

"Are you feeling unwell?" Father asked. "Don't worry, it will get better. It's just the weight difference."

Third Part

 

Someone called out to my father, "Governor, the Press and TV are waiting for you."

কেউ বাবাকে ডেকে বললেন, "গভর্নর, প্রেস ও টিভি আপনার জন্য অপেক্ষা করছে।"

"Oh sure, I'll come right away."  "ওহ নিশ্চিত, আমি এখনই আসব।"

I watched him leave down the aisle.  আমি তাকে করিডোর ছেড়ে যেতে দেখলাম।

Immediately I swung my legs down to the floor. সঙ্গে সঙ্গে আমি পা মেঝেতে দুলালাম।

I realized standing was tough and walking was very difficult.    আমি বুঝতে পারছিলাম যে দাঁড়ানো শক্ত ছিল এবং হাঁটা খুব কঠিন ছিল।

I practised, one foot and then the other, up and down the aisle, holding on to the seat backs for support.

আমি অনুশীলন করেছিলাম, এক পা এবং তারপরে অন্যটি, করিডোর টির উপরে এবং নীচে, সমর্থনের জন্য সিটের পিঠে চেপে ধরে।

"I am convinced that with a clear understanding of our problems, the differences can be settled in a friendly manner."

"আমি নিশ্চিত যে আমাদের সমস্যাগুলির স্পষ্ট ভাবে বুঝে পার্থক্য গুলি বন্ধুত্বপূর্ণ উপায়ে নিষ্পত্তি করা যেতে পারে।"

"Governor, how long do you think you will stay on Earth?"  "গভর্নর, আপনি কতক্ষণ পৃথিবীতে থাকবেন বলে মনে করেন?"

"That's a difficult question to answer. All my cultural ties are with Earth. But I must say that it is the Moon where my present and future lie. My son was born there. My wife was buried there. My work is there. Father saw me standing among the reporters.বাবা আমাকে সাংবাদিকদের মাঝে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকতে দেখেন।

He gave me his arm.  তিনি আমাকে তাঁর বাহু দিয়েছেন।

We walked together on the landing pad.  আমরা একসাথে অবতরণ প্যাডে হাঁটলাম।

The sun was gently warm.  রোদ হালকা গরম ছিল।

I looked up.  আমি উপরের দিকে তাকালাম।

It was strange being outside without a space-suit.  স্পেস-স্যুট ব্যতীত বাইরে থাকা ব্যাপারটা অবাক হওয়ার মত ছিল।

Earth will certainly be fun.  পৃথিবী অবশ্যই মজাদার হবে।

I lay back and thought of the pyramids and the Taj Mahal and the mysterious jungle buildings of the Incas.
